![]() ![]() Air Force) Dirt BoyzĮven the Air Force has to come back down to earth sometimes, and civil engineer airmen make sure that the roads, buildings and infrastructure airmen use during their terrestrial hours are in tip-top shape. LaVoie was a member of an all-female C-17 crew that flew a local mission in honor of Women’s History Month. Cassandra LaVoie, 3rd Airlift Squadron loadmaster, checks the movement restricting chains aboard a C-17 Globemaster III before flight March 5, 2018, at Dover Air Force Base, Del. That training is important, because Air Force cargo can involve anything from tanks to dolphins to hundreds of refugees fleeing wartorn Kabul. Loadmasters also learn how to conduct a cargo airdrop and oversee airborne troops jumping out the back of the plane. ![]() Even tying down the cargo takes skill and calculation, because depending on its weight and height that cargo may need additional restraints to keep it from coming loose in flight or on landing. A loadmaster’s job is to figure out how to load the cargo without upsetting the aircraft’s balance or surpassing its weight limit, which would make taking off, flying and landing a tricky business. There is a science to putting people and objects on Air Force cargo aircraft such as the C-130, C-17 and C-5. ![]() ![]() Who handles the cargo and passengers once they are on the airplane? Air Force loadmasters, of course. They also clean the lavatories on aircraft, so give a port dawg a big ‘thank you for your service’ next time you see one. Fork Force or no, the port dawgs are the elbow grease behind the U.S. Some have even proposed creating their own branch known as the Fork Force. Air transportation specialists also drive forklifts to put stuff on planes, and some drivers take immense pride in being the real backbone of the U.S. This reporter is not sure where the “dawgs” comes from exactly, but the “port” is likely short for “aerial port squadrons,” which many Port Dawgs belong to. They are the ones who “plan, schedule and process” passengers, cargo and baggage and load them onto military and contracted aircraft, according to the Air Force. ‘Port Dawgs’ is the nickname for airmen who work in the air transportation AFSC. military has a worldwide presence, but that presence would fall apart if not for the people who load stuff onto airplanes so it can get to Japan, Korea, the Persian Gulf, or anywhere else. Airmen in each Air Force Specialty Code (the service’s term for Military Occupational Specialty) take pride in what they do, to the point where there are a dazzling number of nicknames for each role, and non-Air Force folks may have no idea what they are talking about.Įveryone wants to be “joint” operations these days, and what is a better way to do that than to speak Air Force-ese? Below is a primer to get you started. The Air Force in particular has several highly-specialized jobs that play essential roles in keeping aircraft ready to fly. With its host of acronyms, ranks, ratings and buzzwords, the military has a language all its own, with plenty of localized jargon and dialects for each branch, occupation and even unit developing unique words to do their jobs. Air Force Senior Airman Nickolas Trowbridge, 99th Security Forces Squadron security forces journeyman, communicates through a hand-held radio, Aug. ![]() ![]() How about you drop the archaic mentality? It's 2020, turns out people can be paid for just having the skill to digitally paint as oppose to getting paid for a finished physical work. Even though it's more famous for its realistic watercolours it does also have a set of Acrylic brush tools that function in a similar way to Oil brushes in other software.Ĭritical reading skills much? OP literally starts out saying that they "recently started painting with oils" so yes they are doing the "real" thing. The big downside I have with it is the way that different brush types require separate layers which stops the "paint" from mixing.Īnd one that hasn't been mentioned much is Rebelle. Painter has the largest variety of brushes for this kind of thing with options that go from simple digital brushes with a painterly look to full-on, thick-paint simulations with impressive impasto effects. ![]() Also that interface is very clunky to use but all free software is worth trying out. Verve has an amazing fluid simulation system but it is more dependent on hardware and can be slow on older machines. Personally I prefer ArtRage because, as well as the brushes, it also has some wonderfully expressive blending options with the palette knife. There are a few digital apps that replicate not just oil but several types of traditional mediums. As the program versions download separately you also have the freedom to trial new versions before you decide if they're worth the upgrade. They do have a free trial with all features iirc so you could always look for an older license/boxed copy if you end up liking it and upgrade whenever. You are also under no obligation to upgrade, I'm still on 2019 and probably won't upgrade to 2021 until next year before the release of 2022. 2021 has only just released so there will probably be a decent Christmas sale. ![]() The upside of it is once you own the program its cheaper to upgrade to the newer version and they run a lot of sales throughout the year which drops the cost to about 50‰ so it's definitely worth waiting for one. There's lots of resources out there though. I find it very intuitive but I've heard others find it quirky, and while you can get on and start painting right away there's then a bit of a learning curve to step up and really take advantage of all its features. Painter is expensive (that initial purchase is pain) but it is hands down my favourite painting program, although I haven't tried a couple of the other suggestions in this thread which I definitely will do. ![]() ![]() Crazy how brain and body work! By the way, I think this has a lot to do with the VR implementation. The whole experience from reality, like braking (not so much the crashes, I've only had someone hit my side once so far), affects my body and I feel like it's pushing me forward. I'm shaking inside because my brain is anticipating the impact - this feeling is especially strong when I'm driving with a steering wheel. I'm in a virtual race car, and I've just hit the barriers because I completely messed up the corner. So far, so familiar - only it's a lot more direct, a lot more realistic now. I always feel like I can achieve much better lap times if I just learn to brake more accurately and corner more cleanly. I plugged in a Logitech G29 ( Amazon US) and the driving experience is instantly so much better than with a controller.Īs time goes by, I get into a driving flow like I did back in the days on the PS3. But it's really great with a steering wheel. It is awesome with the PS5 controller, just because of the fine force feedback on things like acceleration. Along with the motivating gameplay, that's what keeps me in the driver's seat. ![]() Gran Turismo still takes the crown because the overall experience is just more vivid, more real, more immersive. I have also played other racing games in VR, like Project Cars 2 and 3, which are really good looking games for PC VR, and the gameplay experience in VR is great there as well. The dynamic weather system not only makes a difference in terms of gameplay: When raindrops hit the windshield with increasing speed, the immersion behind the wipers is just perfect. ![]() Circuits and environments look great, the lighting is fantastic, and the sun sometimes dazzles me through the rearview mirrors. Because now the lights turn green, and you're on full throttle.ĭay or night, the free view outside does not disappoint. Each car is so detailed that it would be a pleasure to take a closer look - but you'd better do that in VR mode in the garage. ![]() Gran Turismo 7 VR - What does it look like?įor VR players, the magic begins at the start of the race: First I see my car on a huge 2D screen, then the image changes, and I'm inside. ![]() ![]() The traditional method remains the most popular, however, there is also the modern color wheel, which is based on the CMYK model. The tertiary hues are a blend of your primary and secondary hues and include the below. The primary hues for this model include red, yellow, and blue, while the secondary hues are orange, green, and purple (violet). We all know the RYB color method that is used to mix paints and is often used as the more common way to create different color combinations. However, today, there are different color wheels available that play a role for various purposes. Each color placement and the relationship to other colors on the color wheel is what is used to create the color combinations. ![]() Each color is not placed randomly on the color wheel, there is a set placement for each color. We have already established that the color wheel and the associated geometric shapes are what form color harmony. The color combinations, represented as shapes on the color wheel can also be adjusted to create different saturation levels, values, shades, and tints, so there are numerous options to choose from when creating a design. These associated shapes help to produce eye-pleasing contrasts as well as harmonious pairings. If you consider this, color harmony is the aesthetically pleasing and balanced combination of colors, which are based on the color wheel and its geometric associations. When talking about color harmony, you are dealing with color theory and the color wheel, which provides all the guidelines you will need to create the best grouping of colors. The color wheel is the circular visual representation of these colors. The colors discovered were the seven colors of the rainbow, which eventually developed into 12 different hues, which include your primary, secondary, and tertiary or intermediate colors. The color wheel and the ideas behind it began many years ago, with Sir Isaac Newton, who while experimenting with the light spectrum and prisms. When studying further into colors, it might at first seem overwhelming, but if you follow the guidelines, it should be a fun and rewarding experience. It is the base of every design as well as artwork, using color relationships to create a balanced and harmonious look or feel to a design or space.
